CHAPTER SEVEN
A couple days passed and Jim had not heard from Steve. He began to worry that maybe he was having second thoughts. Things had seemed to go well at the dinner the other night and Steve seemed to like Jason. Jim decided he was probably being silly and needlessly worrying about a problem that didnât exist. He had not been home from work more than ten minutes when the phone rang.
âHello, this is Jim.â
âWell, hello yourself. Sorry I havenât called sooner but things have been crazier than usual at the station and Iâve been getting home really late every night. Didnât want to take the chance on waking Jason. The reason Iâm calling is Iâd like to take you and Jason out for dinner and a movie on Saturday.â
âGosh, thatâd be great. What did you have in mind?â
âMinions is opening at the Cineplex on Friday and itâs gotten terrific reviews. Sounds like a great animation for kids, but with enough adult humor thrown in to where weâll all have a good time. How does that sound for Jason?â
âOh, heâll love that. I wonât tell him anything until Saturday or heâll not get anything done at school the entire week. Heâs going to be so excited.â
âGreat. Iâll get tickets in advance so weâll be sure to have a seat. Thought weâd make it real fun for him and get hotdogs and soda at the movie. That okay with you?â
âI donât know about that. I try to keep him away from junk food as much as I can and donât want him to develop a soda habit.â
âItâll just be this once. Youâve got to let him be a kid sometimes, Jim. Promise I wonât make a habit of it, but I think it would be great fun for him and us.â
âOkay, youâve twisted my arm. Just donât think youâre gonna have your way all the time. Well, maybe in the bedroom I wouldnât mind. What time on Saturday?â
âMovie starts at five-fifteen. Iâll pick you guys up around four-thirty and thatâll give us plenty of time to get the food and be settled in our seats before the show starts.â
âThanks. Canât wait to see you again.â
âSame here.â
When Jim finally told Jason about the plans for that evening he began jumping up and down.
âIâm gonna see Minions?! That is so cool, Daddy. They make me laugh and I canât wait. When we going?â
âSteve will be here soon. Weâre going to have hotdogs and a Coke at the movie.â
âWow! That gonna be so cool. I wish it was time to go right now.â
âWonât be long, so letâs go get ready. Steve will be here in thirty minutes.â
The movie was even better than what they had heard and they all laughed their heads off. Jason was in heaven as he munched away on his hotdog and drank his cola. Steve even bought him a small bag of popcorn, much to Jimâs chagrin.
On the way home all Jason could talk about was how great all the food was and how funny the characters in the movie were, especially Stuart the one-eyed minion.
